Web Hosting : Which Web Hosting Company Is Right For You?

by Ray Lam

For people or companies that wish to promote themselves on the internet then they will need the services of a web hosting provider. Sometimes it is part of the service an internet service provider supplies as part of their package when you sign up with them and can be supplied at no charge. A certain amount of storage space on the server is allocated to each user where they can store their website files and other data for people to access.

Many beginners start by using the free hosting services that are provided by many internet service companies; while they will have access to email facilities, basic websites and blogs, they will have to pay for a full service provider. Free web hosting will not allow a huge mount of storage space so for those people that require sub-domains, upgraded email facilities and increased storage that a paid service is needed. You can search the Web for many of the paid hosting services but their prices may vary depending on the packages they’re offering.

You may settle for a shared server (where you share your space with other website owners) and it is a good tip is to go for the shared hosting first. When the need for more space and security is required then a dedicated server at extra cost can be used. You need to have a registered domain to have a web hosting package otherwise files, websites and other digital information cannot be stored or accessed. Almost any information that is stored on a web server is called a file which can mean audio tracks, images, video footage and the website itself; as digital storage costs drop then the amount of space you are allocated tends to be increased over time.

When you have a paid web hosting package it will allow you to have an email address using your domain name unlike those that are offered free with the likes of Google, Yahoo or MSN for example where their name is at the end of the email address. It always looks like the user is more serious about their internet presence if they have their own email and domain name, it increases credibility. If you have a busy site with lots of visitors, downloads or video etc. then you need to have a hosting package with sufficient bandwidth; this is the amount of data that can be transmitted.

If you only settle for a package with a minimum amount of bandwidth then there will be times when visitors will have trouble viewing your web site or using its facilities. Remember, everything that is stored and can be accessed on your site has a bandwidth, even the website itself so if your site contains images, MP3 tracks and video clips for example, your bandwidth allocation will be used up even faster. You may have your own web host in your PC, but that can be too risky; the best option is to settle for paid web hosting, even if you’re new to the internet.
