It is also a reflection of Canada's unique French-Canadian heritage, and of the time before the land was fully settled and developed. And speaking of interesting animals, the Assiniboine Park Zoo is rated the #1 attraction in Winnipeg. The zoo has a long history of breeding endangered species—including Golden Eagles and Siberian Tigers. It has more than 1200 animals of 275 different species making it one of the largest zoos in Canada. Most popular attractions at the zoo include the Discovery Center, an indoor learning park, and a petting zoo. Winter travelers visiting around Christmas time can catch the Lights of the Wild display. Popular Museums and Attractions in Winnipeg The Manitoba Museum - This museum in the heart of downtown Winnipeg gives visitors a close look at the lives of the Plains Indians and early prairie settlers. The Manitoba Museum has nine galleries including a planetarium, science gallery, and even a five-story sailing ship, the Nonsuch. Michelin Guide's highest rating, "Worth the Trip" was recently awarede to the museum. The Fort Whyte Centre - A popular recreation and nature area especially popular with avid birdwatchers. It is also a great place to take the kids for a day of fun and adventure. With 200 acres of original marshland, the centre is home to more than 200 species of birds and thousands of species of bugs and other creatures. Prairie Dog Central Living Museum - The Prairie Dog Central was the first project undertaken by the Vintage Locomotive Society. Begun in 1968, It is the oldest steam-powered locomotive operating in North America. Visitors can take a two-hour, 45-kilometre tour throught the countryside. Stop in the nearby towns of Warren and Grosse Isle, where town residents organize craft displays and other attractions for visitors. Manitoba Children's Museum - This museum is especially for the kids. It features seven permanent interactive galleries, such as "All Aboard." Here children can take imaginary train rides on a real antique locomotive. In another called "Goals for Kids," kids can test their shooting and goal-stopping skills against NHL stars like the Wayne Gretzky. The Forks Market - A restoration project consisting of several historic buildings featuring shops, restaurants, and interesting displays.
