Intel Invests in Clearwire WiMax Through its venture capital division, computer chip giant Intel has invested 600 million dollars in a small American service provider, Clearwire Corporation. Clearwire is at the leading edge of new wireless internet technology called WiMax.This is the second injection of funds by Intel into Clearwire. Motorola has also invested in Clearwire by agreeing to take over its infrastructure equipment subsidiary called NextNet Wireless. Founded in 1998 in Kirkland, Washington by telecommunications pioneer Craig McCaw, Clearwire has gained a total 900 million dollars (708 million euros) in new financing. These announcements mark a serious investment in the promising and potentially very influential WiMax concept. In a joint announcement, the three companies said they hope to accelerate the development and implementation of WiMax. WiMax differs from WiFi in that it has a range of several kilometers and can offer high-speed internet access to thousands of computer users simultaneously. WiFi is limited to about 100 meters. A relatively simple WiMax network can therefore be used to provide internet access to entire cities or rural areas. For more information about WiMax see WiMax technology
