Health Care on Agenda of U.S. Politicians

U.S. politicians are heating up their commitment to expanding health care and making it more affordable for more Americans. A good example is Baltimore Mayor Martin O'Malley in his quest to become governor of Maryland.

O'Malley promised yesterday that, if elected governor, he would aggressively pursue ways to make health insurance and prescription drugs more affordable. His proposals included helping Marylanders buy drug refills from Canada, sponsoring an insurance purchasing pool for small businesses and providing tax credits to entice companies to participate.

O'Malley criticised incumbent Republican governor Robert L. Ehrlich Jr. saying he had done nothing to make health care more affordable. He claimed that the number of uninsured residents in Maryland grew by 160,000 during Ehrlich's first three years in office.

A spokesperson for Ehrlich responded that during Ehrlich's tenure, an additional 80,000 Marylanders had gained access to health care, mostly through the Medicaid program, because of the governor's efforts.

Recent statewide polls in Maryland found that 71% of voters considered "a lack of affordable health insurance coverage" either "extremely serious" or "very serious". This was second only to "crimes, drugs and gangs" (76%.)

O'Malley's focus on health care demonstrates how serious this issue has become both with citizens and health care providers alike. There is a growing concern that the current system cannot be maintained without some serious adjustments.

In the face of federal inability to make substantial changes to the system, state and local governments are increasingly looking for solutions to make health care more affordable.
