New York homeless have more HIV

Feb 10, 2006 - Linknet Health News - According to a study conducted by Bonnie Kerker, an epidemiologist with New York City's Department of Homeless Services, homeless men and women are much more susceptible to health problems than others in the city.

The study looked at more than 100,000 people who had spent at least one night in a homeless shelter between 2001 and 2003.

It found that homeless men and women die at twice the rate of other New Yorkers, and HIV/AIDS and substance abuse account for nearly one third of all homeless deaths.

It also found that homeless people are seven times more likely than other New Yorkers to die from AIDS-related causes. The rate of new HIV cases is 16 times higher among the homeless than the general population. Also, homeless women have higher HIV-prevalence rates than men.

The city used the results to implement changes to HIV-testing policies in shelters across the city.
