The combination of tough economic times and stories of impending doom have caused crucial introspection for most people. This article is in response to a number of questions readers have sent to educationline.org.
Eric Hoffer offered a quotation that is very fitting to set the pace for this article. It goes as such: In a time of drastic change it is the learners who inherit the future. The learned usually find themselves equipped to live in a world that no longer exists.
Generally, our readers submit questions regarding online education universities, what adult education is available online, where can one get an online degree, etc. Lately, the inquiries have become very career related. Here are the top 3 questions and answers:
Q. I have an undergraduate degree, and am a professional. Should I consider completing my full degree even with rumor of layoffs in my industry? Sometimes it is best to answer a question with another question. Where do you want to be in 10 years? If you go back to University on a full time basis, you would have to quit your job now and invest in your education further. Now looking at a 10 year term, if you consider online education you can do it on a part time basis to complete your degree. This will give you an upper hand on your future job seekers.
Q. I have lost my job and want to take a look at a new career. How do I know what to take? A. Its time to be a little reflective. Your major considerations should be whether or not you study full-time or part-time (this is usually dependent on your financial situation). Are there any careers that you have a particular yen for? Take some time to write a list of things you would enjoy doing, and things you dont ever want to do. Then go online and start to search. If a career has seven out of the ten attributes you are looking for then see if that industry is hiring. If you go to Monster, Yahoo, Workopolis, job boards, youll get a good idea.
Q. Im not sure if I should go back to school full time, part time (nights and weekends) or online? A. Your main considerations have to be how much time do you have available, and what can you afford? Attending school part-time will take you more time; however, it is also more economical as you can pay for one course at a time versus paying for an entire semester. If both time and money are an issue, then online education is the way to go as you can do it at your own pace and you can pay per course.
With the onset of recession fast becoming a reality, it is wise to remember that layoffs and job loss will happen. Employers are seeking the best person, with the best education for the dollar. They now have the ability to pick and choose so if nothing else, remember that a commitment to bettering yourself through education does at very least indicate an ability to commit to a prospective employer.

Online education was born in the 1960’s. It’s welcome was lukewarm at best.
Students worried if degrees from online colleges would be recognized. And, their concern was well justified; many employers were outspoken about their reluctance to hire online university graduates.
In addition, traditional colleges and universities were outspoken about their objection to online education. How could college level learning take place without the traditional educational interaction that takes place in a classroom, they asked. How could distance education offer real academic quality?
Today, online colleges and degree programs are perceived quite differently. Students have no trepidation about the recognition of distance education degrees in the workplace. That’s because few employers now make any distinction between traditionally earned and online degrees. Even traditional universities, which resisted online education for decades, now hire administrators and faculty who hold online degrees.
More surprisingly, many of the very colleges and universities that opposed distance education now offer it. Even graduate/professional degrees, including PhD’d, EdD’s, PsyD’s, and J.D.’s are available online.
On the downside, there are still some degree mills out there offering bogus degrees to anyone willing and able to write a check. However, most of the states in which the degree mills have operated are cracking down on them. And, more accredited online degree programs are being offered than ever before.
As late as 1975 or 1980 there were a very limited number of accredited universities with online degree programs. Furthermore, they offered degrees in only a very few major areas of study. Now there are in excess of 200 fully accredited U.S. institutions offering degrees at all levels.
Even better is the fact that students in online education programs can now qualify for all kinds of financial aid. Until fairly recently, that was not the case.
Online education has come a long way in a short time. It has gone from being an experimental, somewhat risky way to earn a degree to a widely accepted way for working adults to obtain the degrees they need to move forward in their careers. For most working adults, in fact, it is a great alternative to traditional degree programs.

Homeschooling is legal in every state, but the choice to homeschool should not be made lightly. Research and discussion are required to make a wise decision. How do you tell if homeschooling is right for your family? Here are a few questions to ask yourself when considering homeschooling as an option for your family.
When considering homeschooling, ask yourself if you are comfortable spending all of your time with your children. Some main reasons that people homeschool is because they want the best for their children and love them unconditionally. They also love spending time with their children. On the other note, if your children frustarte you easily, then homeschooling is not a good match for you.
Will questions bother me? Homeschoolers are usually asked a lot of questions. Those questions could be about what curriculum they’re using or about socialization for their children. If you homeschool, it helps if you don’t mind answering the same questions more than once.
Checking out books from your library can help with finding information about homeschooling. There is more than likely a large source of books that can be checked out with valuable information on homeschooling. The librarian is also a good source to find out if there are any homeschoolers in the area, since they largely rely upon the library for source material.
After reading some books, finding local homeschoolers, or doing an internet search for “homeschool groups (your city)” or “homeschool groups (your state),” you will know if there is a support system available. Do not give up because there are homeschooling co-ops available in many placces, as well as opportunities for families to get together and have fun.
What if I have other questions? After you’ve found some families that already homeschool, and ask them about the pros and cons of homeschooling. Most families will be honest about their reasons, and will be more than happy to help you make an informed decision. Ask them what types of hardships they had to deal with when starting out. Should you be concerned about socialization for your children? What about curriculum? Do they have suggestions about what to use or not to use?
What curriculum to choose? There are many choices - often in the price, and in the choices available. While it is possible to have “school at home” without using a set curriculum, it is also possible to homeschool by choosing books that are offered in most public schools. Library books should give you an idea about what your child should be learning in each grade, and should explain all the various methods.

Take care of your high school GPA from freshman year
This is a no-brainer but should be said anyway. Some students like to slack-off after middle school - it’s a new environment, you may not have a solid group of friends, you’re still getting use to everything. But a poor freshman year GPA can kill you.
You think that a few C’s or 70’s can be made up by strong AP and Honors inflated grades, but Harvard pays attention to your COMPLETE 4 YEAR TRANSCRIPT. A few C’s and 70’s in easy courses like Biology I will make Ivy League schools think that you can’t handle basic academic material. Your high school class grades matter - all 4 years.
Study for and take the SAT now
In an earlier post on SAT scores for Ivy League admissions, I explain the “minimum” score necessary for Ivy League admissions.
My general advice is that you should shoot for a perfect score (why not??) but be happy with a “good score” (anything above 2100). Don’t take the SAT too many times - anything more than 2 times or so without 100+ strides each time just makes you look desperate.
You should also take the test as early as possible - take the Duke University TIP in 7th grade, take the PSAT in freshman year at least once. It won’t go on your permanent score transcript and Harvard won’t be mad that you got a 1800 as a freshman high school student.
It’s a great opportunity for practice that has no consequences. Why wouldn’t you do that?
Get involved in clubs from day one
Notice my advice here - an early start is ideal for Ivy League candidates. By joining different activities and clubs your freshman year, you demonstrate to Harvard that you are committed to specific interests/passions.
Ideally, you’d stay involved in those clubs over at least 2-3 years. However, if you find that the Spanish Club is really not where you’d prefer spending Wednesday afternoon, that’s ok - just make sure you’re not going home to watch reruns of the Simpsons.
Diversify at least a little
I usually say it’s more about unique stories than it is about being good at everything. After all, college admissions offices want diverse and well-rounded student bodies but don’t need everyone to be an early Renaissance man.
Build a core set of commitments
By having a coherent theme - for instance, a passion for inner city issues or a love of music (as shown through participation in things like the String Orchestra and involvement in music-related nonprofits) is a great way to build a CLEAR AND UNIQUE IDENTITY that, if strong enough, is your best shot at getting into Ivy League schools.
Visit campus
By visiting campus, you show a clear interest in that school. Plus, you’ll meet people along the way that will help you understand whether you’re a better fit for Harvard or Princeton, Penn or Brown.
Prepare for college interviews
IMPORTANT - don’t forget to start doing this early. If you’re a strong candidate, this isn’t something that you wait until the last minute to get ready for.
The best way to study for college interviews is to practice interviews with older people like teachers and your family - not your best friend. Have them quiz you on your accomplishments, your life challenges, your reasons for wanting to attend Yale.

We love pets. That’s why we have them, right? But did you know that there are actual health benefits for people who own pets? These real health benefits include low cholesterol levels, low blood pressure, reduced stress levels and better mental health.
Pets require our attention. Going for a walk, dropping everything for a game of Frisbee or hide and seek, going on a trail ride, and providing everyday pet care encourage owners to interact and to get out. We benefit from the exercise and fresh air that we may not seek out on our own. This does wonders for our health and emotions.
Below are more ways on how pets help humans live richer and fuller lives:
Pet Therapy Hospitals, children’s hospitals in particular, usually use pet therapy with amazing benefits for the sick and terminally ill. Pets also help autistic patients interact.
Horse Therapy Horses and horse riding is also part of pet therapy. Riding horses teaches balance and flexibility to the handicapped and gives a sense of accomplishment and companionship to those involved. Some programs are related to the care of horses as well, teaching responsibility and horsemanship skills.
Service Dogs Dogs are amazingly adaptable to the needs of humans. Services provided by dogs for humans include: dogs that guide the blind, assist the deaf, assist the mobility-impaired, even alert epileptic owners that a seizure is imminent so the owner can sit down and take medicine before the seizure strikes. Dogs can be trained to turn on/off lights, pick up objects and pull wheel chairs of handicapped people.
Police and Search & Rescue Dogs Police dogs serve officers by sniffing out drugs, explosives and other dangerous chemicals long before a human can. Search and rescue dogs use their powerful sense of smell to locate lost or injured people.

Some pets may develop joint disease in the first half of their lives but signs usually do not appear until the latter part and may vary depending on your pet’s breed. Dogs are more susceptible to arthritis than cats and larger dog breeds are more vulnerable than smaller breeds.
There are many factors that cause arthritis. These include ligament, tendon or muscle disease like a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament; fractures involving the joint; developmental disorders like hip dysplasia, elbow dysplasia, osteochondritis dissecans and Legg-Perthes diseases; and congenital disorders like Wobbler’s syndrome (cervical spondylomyelopathy) and luxated patella.
Other possible causes are dietary and hormonal disease like hyperparathyroidism or obesity; metabolic disorders like von Willebrand’s disease (hemophilia) in dogs; cancer; degenerative joint disease (osteoarthritis); inflammatory joint disease like, Lyme disease and rheumatoid arthritis; degenerative spinal joint disease like intervertebral disc disease and cauda equina syndrome.
Medical treatment of hip dysplasia and osteoarthritis has greatly improved in the last several years thanks to the introduction and approval of several new supplements and drugs. Because hip dysplasias (and other types of dysplasias) are primarily inherited conditions, there are no products in the market that prevent their development.
Through proper diet, exercise, supplements, anti-inflammatory drugs and pain relief, you may be able to decrease the progression of degenerative joint disease but the looseness in the joint or bony changes will not change significantly.
Medical management is indicated for both young dogs with clinical signs and for older dogs with chronic osteoarthritis. Because of the high cost involved with many surgeries, medical management is often the only realistic option for many pet owners. Medical management is multifaceted.

water damage
is a serious problem for home owners. If you have a water leak or even
worse a flood you need to contact a professional company.
Water Damage Restoration
Dear Insurance Agent:
It’s the call you don’t want to hear. On the other end of the line is a
harried homeowner with a flood on their hands. You know that time is
critical in getting a water damage restoration company to the house,
because if left untreated, water damage can create a nightmare for the
homeowner and the insurance agent, and costs to restore a water damaged
home can skyrocket. Here’s how my company can help you with your water
restoration needs.
Mold is Dangerous
Many water restoration companies just don’t understand the danger of
mold buildup after water damage occurs. Many homeowners don’t, either.
They think a quick steam cleaning or drying fans will do the trick.
That’s not always the case. If a carpet, baseboard, or underlayment
gets wet and does not dry properly, mold can begin to grow. First, mold
and mildew are unsightly and smell bad, but mold is a health hazard,
too. Mold can create a host of health problems like a skin rash, red,
watery eyes, sneezing, and a runny nose. It can irritate the skin,
eyes, nose, lungs, and throat, and it can create breathing problems in
people with asthma or lung disease. If left untreated, mold can
continue to grow until it is almost impossible to remove, and this
means a major headache for the homeowner who deals with a substandard
water restoration company.
Immediate Treatment
Heavy water damage can undermine the foundations of a home or business,
leading to structural problems later on, and it must be treated
quickly, because mold can begin to grow in as little as 48 hours. The
quicker you begin treating the problem, the quicker the home or
business can get back to normal, so it’s imperative that you call me
ASAP when you get a water restoration claim. I can get my water
restoration crew to your affected home or business at any time of the
day or night, and I have 20 year’s experience in helping homeowners and
businesses with their water restoration needs, so I know what to do to
help clean up and dry out as quickly as possible. I also know that
superficial treatment doesn’t work in the long run, and I will make
sure the water damage is cleaned up quickly and effectively, so the
long term disruption to the homeowner is kept to a minimum. Shoddy
clean-up can lead to even bigger problems later on, so I’ll do it right
the first time so it doesn’t have to be done again.
Minimize Costs
You want to keep your insurance claims as small as possible, and I can
help you with that, too. You see, a quick response to water damage
saves time and money, too. The quicker I can get to your client’s home
and start clean-up, the faster the damage will be repaired, and the
less your insurance company will have to pay out in a claim. I work
with insurance agents all the time, and I understand the need for
quick, efficient clean-up work. I also understand the need for
paperwork and assurances the work is completed to the client’s and the
agent’s satisfaction, and I’ll provide you with the assurances you need
to help speed the claim through the process. A quick clean-up means
less disruption to the home or business, too, so they can get on with
their lives without further worry about mold and other health hazards.
What You Can Do
How can you make sure your homeowner gets the best water restoration
possible? Use a company like mine, who has been doing this for 20
years, and has a vested interest in the client’s we serve. We want our
clients to come back again, if they need us. We won’t disappear after
the water damage is cleaned up, we’ll make sure everything is shipshape
with a follow up call and a detailed report of the damage that we
fixed. In addition, we will get there as soon as possible to minimize
the damage and the costs. We’ll come back and clean carpets, draperies,
and furniture too, after the structural damage has been repaired, so
the homeowner can get back to normal as quickly as possible.
What To Look For
Here’s what you should watch for when you hire a water restoration
company. Some companies are more concerned with the size of their bill
than efficiently cleaning up after water damage to a home. Some
companies will expect their clients to live for a week or more with
large, noisy fans and equipment blasting through their home in an
attempt to dry out the affected area. These fans run 24 hours a day,
and this is uncomfortable and disruptive to the homeowner. If the fans
are strategically placed underneath the house (if possible), it can
reduce drying time by half, and it can mean a lower insurance claim,
because the fans are in and out in days, instead of weeks.
In addition, some restoration companies don’t look deeper than a floor
or carpet for water damage, and they don’t understand the underlying
health problems that mold can cause. My company has dealt with water
damage for 20 years, and I know the potential problems that can exist
in underlayment, baseboards, drywall, and underneath a house. My crew
is professional and trained to look for potential damage throughout the
affected area, and to give a full report that you can use as you
prepare and submit the claim. You can be sure that I will report all
the damage I find, so you don’t end up with a claim from the homeowner
again, when they discover additional damage that wasn’t addressed by a
low-end water restoration firm.
Finally, some water restoration companies disappear after the “dry out”
the area, and they never follow up with a phone call to make sure
everything is right. Even worse, they drop the ball when it comes to
providing you with what you need to finish the claim, like samples of
damaged flooring, carpet, drywall, or other items. I won’t drop the
ball, period. I’ll make sure you get everything you need to handle that
claim as quickly as possible, and I’ll follow up to make sure
everything is a-OK, too.
“It’s Just a Little Rain”
A lot of homeowners don’t realize the dangers of mold and structural
damage when it comes to water damage. They think a “little” leak can
just be mopped up or steam cleaned, but that’s not the case. Water
damage can leave floors and walls warped, it can seep into drywall and
wood walls, creating real damage that can’t be seen, but could go
untreated for years, eventually making the home or business
uninhabitable. Homeowners need to be aware that any water damage can
have the potential to create major damage, and they shouldn’t leave
their clean-up efforts to chance. They also need to know that even
though a carpet may look clean and dry, there can be mold growing in
the pad, or underneath the pad in the wood underlayment underneath the
floor. This is a very dangerous situation that can create all the
health problems associated with mold, and if it isn’t treated, it can
just continue to grow until it ruins the flooring completely, leading
to health concerns and a much bigger claim for your company. Recommend
a professional like me to help homeowners assess the damage and get it
cleaned up as quickly as possible, and your claims will be much easier
to manage and complete.
I want homeowners to understand that water damage can be much more
serious than they might think, and that it can have long term health
consequences, and long term structural consequences, as well. I want
you to know that I treat water damage seriously, and I won’t scrimp
when it comes to making sure all the damage is treated effectively and
completely before I leave the client.
Other Services
My company also provides carpet cleaning services with all organic
products. I use a cleaning method that ensures the carpets will dry
within three hours, which is perfect in cases of minor water damage
that might occur in a home or business. I can clean upholstery and
draperies, too, and I always use products that are environmentally
friendly and aren’t dangerous for children or pets. I want to develop a
relationship with my clients, not desert them as soon as the job is
finished, so even after I clean up water damage, I maintain a
relationship with your homeowners by continuing to clean their carpets
and upholstery when they need it. This means I stand behind my work,
rather than “repairing” water damage and then disappearing, without any
interest in making sure the work is done right and the damage is fully
repaired.
The Bottom Line on water damage
Water damage won’t just dry up and go away. I know, I’ve seen just
about every kind of damage from minor to heavy, and I know the problems
it can cause. Water damage disrupts the family, can create serious
health hazards, and can bring a home or business to its knees if not
treated effectively. I understand and appreciate the dangers, and I
will work tirelessly to ensure that the damage is cleaned up the right
way, in the least amount of time possible, so your client can get back
to their lives, with the peace of mind that comes from knowing the job
has been completed effectively and safely. I stand behind my service,
and I hope you will give me a try the next time you have a client with
water damage who needs the best service possible..
