Volunteer Work Gives Seniors More Energy

A recent study lends support to the popular assumption that when seniors and retirees get involved in community activities they have more energy and become more physically active in their daily lives.

The study done by researchers at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore looked at older adults who served as mentors and tutors in local elementary schools. The program was called Experience Corps, and it found that those who were sedentary before joining the program got more than twice as much physical activity during the school year.

Researchers found that those involved in the program were more active in general. They were better at getting household and gardening chores completed, and they watched less TV.

The activity boost registered among the school program volunteers was similar to the boost seniors get from exercise of other kinds. They also conclused that activity of this sort gave the participants more mental and social stimulation.

Previous studies have found that volunteer programs of this sort also help the reading skills of the children. Volunteers worked in a Baltimore public elementary school for 15 hours per week, where they helped children with their reading skills, problem solving, and cooperation.
